On that day:

Money. Who needs it?! Part 2

We are getting into a real routine of being broke now and I have to admit that I am really surprised by how many things the average person considers to be necessities that are actually luxuries. And not needed at all. What's even more surprising to me is that it's all okay. Yes, there is terrible stress surrounding bills and such, but being broke, in and of itself, is not all that bad. I am finding that one becomes more focused on what's important.

It's ironic, but I almost feel that money loses its luster the less you have (to a point, of course). I noticed the opposite of that as a teenager babysitting: the rich parents always paid less than the rest, as though they get taken over by the money. They have to have more more more!

The one thing that does make me sad right now, though, is the fact that I can't do any Christmas shopping. One of the best parts of Christmas is finding gifts for people. I love the atmosphere, the challenge, the thrill of finding the perfect gift for someone. And I miss that.

I totally know how you feel about Christmas and not having money. Some of the best times I had were making my gifts. Some ideas: I found clear vases/jars at 2nd hand stores, bought small clear 20-50 string lights and potpourri. I would layer the lights and potpourri and cover with a loose knit doiley and ribbon/rafia. I gave those to all of the moms one year. My mom still uses hers. And the dad's that year got shelves, etc with baby food jars attached to them by the lid, where they hung down. They were supposed to be used for trinket, nails, screws, etc holders. I don't know if anybody actually used them. One year I did framed hand prints of the kids. The next year I did their feet. My mother-in-law still has those on her living room wall. Last year I made everybody a set of ornaments with clear and frosted craft ornaments, and added paint and glued feathers, berries etc on them. I know some people kind looked their noses up at them, but others loved them. Some years we can buy "regular" presents, other years it is too difficult. I know my family understands, I can't totally read his family. They are usually the nose turner uppers. Hey, you can only do so much.

It's so nice to know that people understand. Thanks for commenting!

We've also made gifts in the past, but not many. The best ones we did were big wide, cheap, nude wood frames that the boys and I glued tons of buttons to.

You've got some great ideas, too- I especially love the hand and footprint ideas!
